Astragalus membranaceus is one of the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has long been prized for its ability to stimulate the immune system and promote longevity.
Astragalus contains polysaccharides, astragalosides, astragalin, kaempferol, quercetin, nicotinic acid, isoflavones (including calycosin and formononetin), and trace amounts of GABA. Many studies are conducted on astragaloside IV, which is considered one of the primary active constituents.
Astragalus is one of the most widely researched herbs in TCM, and may have a wide range of beneficial tonic effects.
In TCM astragalus is used as much as a food than an herb, with doses above 1oz per day being fairly common. It is traditionally boiled in broth to create and nutritious infusion that can be used in soups/stews, or drank daily as is. It can also be used in tea in doses ranging from 1-8g as well. The root I have stocked is cut and sifted, and made up of small pieces each less than a cm across.
