Gastrodia elata, or Tian Ma, is an herb used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for sleep, neuropathies, or over-stimulation. A growing body of research suggests it may be especially useful for protecting the brain from glutamate excess and neurotoxicity.
It contains 4-HBA, gastrodin, vanillin, phenols, glycosides, polysaccharides, fiber, and a variety of nutrients and minerals. Gastrodin and 4-HBA are two of its most well-researched constituents and are responsible for many of its benefits.
Gastrodia is an orchid tuber, which I stock in the form of root slices. It can be used in tea, or mixed into broth as it was used traditionally. A good starting dose seems to be between 0.5-3 tsp of powder.
