Polygala tenuifolia, also called Yuan Zhi, is another one of the 50 fundamental herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. In TCM it is specifically known for being a tonic for Shen, the house of the spirit. Overall polygala is one of my favorite herbs, providing powerful neurogenesis support and a noticeable lift of the spirits.
Polygala contains tenuifolisides A, B, and C, 3,6'-disaponylsucrose (DISS), tenuifoliose A, B, C, tenuifolin, tenuigenin, senegenin, senegenin II, senegenin III, polygalasaponin F (PGSF), tenuifoside A, polygalasaponin XXXII, Sibiricose A1, 7-O-methylmangiferin, shibiricaxanthone A, and lancerin, Yuanzhi-1, tetrahydrocolumbamine, triterpenoid glycosides, clionasterol, chondrillasterol, and more. The root I stock is cured with licorice, which increases the absorption of the active compounds.
When used in tea a good starting dose seems to be between 0.5-2 grams. Start with a lower dose and work your way up.
Caution: Herbs that inhibit the monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzyme may interact with certain pharmaceutical or recreational drugs, especially those that also raise serotonin/dopamine. Don't take this herb if you are prescribed anti-depressants or plan to be using stimulant drugs. If in doubt talk to your doctor and do your own research beforehand.
