Oat straw, or Avena sativa, is an herb used traditionally for a wide variety of purposes in both food and herbalism. It is most well known as a nerve tonic.
Oat straw contains beta-glucans, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids (trigonelline, avenine), calcium, iron, B vitamins, and silica. Beta-glucans are considered its primary active compounds, though its nutrient content and alkaloids contribute to its benefits as well.
Oat straw works best brewed in tea, either alone or combined with other herbs. A good dose seems to be between 1-3 tsp.
